I would include the artwork but we gave away every last copy along with the original drawing. You'll probably notice that the disc leans towards gospel songs with a theme of death and redemption - playing records like these all night was a dream for me, and it's all due to those nice fellas from Pocahontas County.
We had to compete with the Oscars, so it was a slow night at the Turf Club - everyone who stayed home missed one of Pocahontas County's best Theme Time sets yet, including an exceptional cover of "Patience" that had the entire bar frozen with anticipation - Axl Rose himself probably can't belt out the end of that song as well as Eric Larson did last night! Special guest Jeremy Gordon delivered a moving performance of Elvis Costello's "So Like Candy" as well, and there was plenty of bluesy guitar shreddin' with Doug Otto and the Getaways and Reina Del Cid and the Cidizens. All in all a memorable Theme Time!

Here's the playlist for the CD. The Hymie's computer was in the shop all week, so I had to go with the playlist I started a while back when we first chose "Lies" as the theme. A few songs that were added to my actual set during the night were left off, and the disc you took home sort of jumps from genre to genre.

And below, for posterity, is the image created by my good friend Paul Burnham for the posters.

1 Liar by the Sex Pistols
2 She's Crafty by the Beastie Boys
3 Liar by Queen
4 Little Bit of Soap by Garnet Mimms
6 Ghosts by the Jam
8 Boys don't Cry by the Cure
9 Lola by the Kinks
10 Lies by the Rolling Stones
11 Without Blinking by Superchunk
12 Dark end of the Street by James Carr
13 Motel Matches by Elvis Costello & the Attractions
14 Who is He (And what is he to You)? by Bill Withers
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">It was a lot of fun to crash a cymbal during the "Jaws" theme for Pocahontas County, and an awesome night of music in general with the Sudden Lovelys and the Poor Nobodys. I have really enjoyed the Lovelys' triple albums which were released last year (and even wrote about them on the Hymie's blog here) but I've never seen them live. Seeing a performance of "Waxwing Bird" and "Venom" made the songs all the better for me. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">I'd also like to say that the first piece the Poor Nobodys played was one of the best things I've seen and heard all year. I was literally, truly on the edge of my seat. It was from the score they did for the 1925 silent movie Battleship Potempkin by Sergei Eisenstein, which I saw during the several years I wasted in college studying things like weird old Russian movies. I wish I had seen their recent performance of it, and I think it would be really amazing to have them do it again - maybe at the Turf Club, even! The Poor Nobodys also have an awesome website (here) and some great music you can buy on CD. I listened to their newest disc today with my daughter and we both loved it, along with the new disc the Sudden Lovelys gave me last night.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"> At first I was overwhelmed by this last theme - how do you find suspenseful music? One I decided most of it should come from movie soundtracks it was a lot of fun to pick songs. Most of the soundtracks sampled on this disc are awesome all the way through, and there are a lot more that I played last night that didn't get included on the disc.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">A couple of notes of interest: "Blood Count" was the last piece of music Billy Strayhorn wrote, and Ellington and his Orchestra recorded it after he died for the tribute album, And his Mother Called him Bill in 1967. Strayhorn died after a long battle with cancer, and the title and the piece's mood suggest the feelings of anxiety and unease that people in such a situation face. Johnny Hodges plays the alto and I've always thought it was one of the best performances in his 70+ year career.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">The Stan Getz/Eddie Sauter album Focus features spontaneous performances by Getz over arrangements by Sauter. Some of the songs were recorded live, with the strings and Getz performing together in the studio. The title "I'm Late, I'm Late" is presumably a reference to the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland, which is one of the reasons I chose it to start the disc.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";">The last note I'll make is that In the Heat of the Night is not a conventional suspense movie but it's one of my all-time favorites. Quincy Jones' score is also a favorite of mine, and was for me an introduction to Roland Kirk when I first heard the album as a teenager - I went on to find and listen to every record on which Kirk played, more than fifty in all!

Lonesome DJ Dave here with a reminder that for each Turf Club Theme Time event I produce a free CD which includes some of the songs played throughout the night. There are usually only a dozen of these so you'll want to stop by the turntables as soon as Pocahontas County finishes their first set.

At first I thought ELECTIONS was going to be a difficult subject, but in the end I had more records than I did time to play them. "Ruckus on Wallstreet" by Jack Klatt & the Cat Swingers is one of my favorite songs by a local band from recent years, and I would have played it if we had not been so fortunate as to have them on the bill last Sunday (you can hear that song, along with the rest of Jack's two amazing discs, on his bandcamp page here). I also thought the Pokie Co. boys did a magnificent job with Randy Newman's "Political Science"!

A lot of the records I played at the show were not on the free disc - two of those I especially love are "Pope County Blues" by the great local singer-songwriter Larry Long (which you can hear here) and a super funky jam by Herb Geller called "Rhyme and Reason Time". That one was an album I found the day before the show!

Here is the track listing for the CD. Everything was played off vinyl 45s and LPs with the exception of some of the campaign excerpts, which I found online or on historical records and recorded to an iPod. The recording of Mitt Romney's remarks to a private fundraiser was mixed with a song by jazz trumpeter Dave Douglas:

1 - The Philosopher King Must Rule (Plato) - read by Sidney Poitier, music by Fred Katz
2 - Elected - Alice Cooper
3 - Excerpt from Ronald Reagan's acceptance speech at the 1980 Republican convention
4 - There is a War - Leonard Cohen
5 - Election Year Rag - Steve Goodman
6 - Excerpt from Richard Nixon's "Last Press Conference" 1962
7 - Van Buren - from the LIFE album of American presidential campaign songs
8 - FDR's Back Again - The New Lost City Ramblers
9 - Mutt Romney Blues - Ry Cooder
10 - Excerpt from Mitt Romney's remarks about "47% of Americans" (music: November by Dave Douglas)
11 - Brother Can you Spare a Dime? - Bing Crosby
12 - Excerpt from a 1936 speech by Huey Long
13 - Long Walk to DC - The Staple Singers
14 - You Can't Fight City Hall - Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band
15 - Excerpt from the 1988 Vice-Presidential debates (Dan Quayle and Lloyd Bentsen)
16 - The Monkey that Became President - Tom T. Hall
17 - Election Day - The Replacements
18 - 1976 campaign ad for Gerald Ford
19 - Mid-American Manufacturing Tycoon - Bobby Russell
20 - Harry Truman - Chicago
21 - Excerpt from the 1980 presidential debate
22 - Alternative Ulster - Stiff Little Fingers
23 - Gimme Some Truth - Generation X
24 - Liar - The Sex Pistols
25 - Excerpt from speech by Ronald Reagan
26 - 20 Years - The Strike
27 - Excerpt from Dwight Eisenhower's farewell address
28 - Shah Mot (The Shah is Dead) - Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson
29 - Ball of Confusion - The Temptations
30 - Excerpt from Richard Nixon's farewell address to the White House staff
31 - You're Getting Better - Ken Nordine

What does it all mean? I can't really say, nor can I promise there's any genuine political leanings in the track selection. I may have used more recordings of Republican presidents but some of that is because Reagan and Nixon had, I think, the best speech writers of the 20th century working for them. The truth is in Steve Goodman's delightful 1976 single-only song "Election Year Rag":

"The winner's always someone else and the loser's always us."
Pocahontas County with Jack Klatt & the Cat Swingers, and Tree Party plus D.J. Lonesome Dave of Hymie's Records spun LP's from his Election themed play list. Russell Rathbun of the House of Mercy riffed on voter options including opting out.

At the Turf Club that night, Barack Obama was elected President. Both the Voter ID amendment and the Marriage amendment were voted down. Better: Saint Paul or Minneapolis? The cities actually tied in the Theme Time vote. Thanks to all who came and made it so fun. And to the cute gal who hit me by accident with the pinata stick, somehow you only knocked my glasses of my nose and I'm totally fine. Til the next Theme Time update...happy days and nights, may your themed dreams take flight.
